Accutane
Accutane is a Vitamin-A derivative, also commonly known as isotretinoin, that works to decrease the size and activity of sebaceous glands. By shrinking these sebaceous glands, the amount of sebum also reduces, which in turn reduces the acne in patients. The course of treatment for Accutane is about 4-7 months depending on the dosage an individual is on. Some of the side effects include dryness, chapping of the lips, and acne flares – which can be managed during treatment. Patients are not allowed to get pregnant while undergoing treatment but may attempt after two menstrual cycles. Blood is drawn one month prior to treatment, and then blood is drawn with every change of dose. When prescribing Accutane, both our office and patients must follow I-Pledge protocols.
