PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY
Photodynamic therapy is a very effective field-treatment for precancerous growths. A topical medication, Levulan Kerastick® (aminolevulinic acid) or Ameluz is applied to the skin and absorbed by the cells. Following a set time period, the aminolevulinic acid is activated by a light source, thereby producing reactive oxygen species which destroy target cells. The easy access of skin to light-based therapy has led physicians to apply PDT to other skin disorders such as acne and squamous cell carcinoma in situ.
Procedure
After the skin is prepped with microdermabrasion and the aminolevulinic acid is applied. The patient will stay with us in the office during incubation for an hour. After incubation, a light source will be applied to the skin.
Post-Procedure
After the treatment, you will need to avoid direct light exposure for 48 hours and follow strict sun protection for 10 days. You will use a gentle cleanser and apply Aquaphor on the treatment area for 7-10 days. Following the procedure, mild crusting and redness is expected for 5-10 days.
